Chapter 2

Assignment #1:

  • Give three examples of what globalization is and how it effects the Hospitality and Tourism Industry. (Open Response MHS Rubric)
    • Three examples of what globalization is would be the responsibility of protecting and maintaining the human and natural resources that make tourism possible, sustainable tourism, and damage to environments. The responsibility of protecting and maintaining the human and natural resources effects the hospitality and tourism industry because it allows people to realize how important it is to keep everything well taken care of, since sooner or later everything will fall apart if it gets to out of control. Sustainable tourism effects the hospitality and tourism industry because tourism industries have to make sure that they can support the residents and the tourist at the same time and make sure both are happy. The damage to the environments effects the hospitality and tourism industry as well because when people go on vacation they like to see a clean well taken care of environment that depicts the scene that is offered.

Assignment #2:
Social and Cultural Impact:
  • Go to http://www.cyborlink.com/ and write out information on two countries and how that knowledge would help you in the Hospitality and Tourism Field (open response MHS rubric)
    • The country of New Zealand has a climate that allows people to be outdoors all the time, that also includes activities such as fishing, hiking, sailing, and competitive sports. In New Zealand the entertainment is done in someone's home and the host/hostess would normally receive a small thank you gift of flowers, chocolates and sometimes whiskey. For tourists it is polite to ask permission to take a photograph of someone or a piece of architect. The attitude of people in New Zealand is warm, polite, and will offer any help they possibly can to someone who is lost. Conversational topics that are discussed are politics, sports and weather, as well as current topics such as New Zealand's "nuclear free" zone. This information will help someone in the hospitality and tourism field because they will know what to look for and what to talk about when they meet someone or need help finding things. It will also help a person know how to act when in a new environment so that way no one will get offended and mad at you.
    • The country of Colombia expects people who are residents or tourist to make a good first impression, that includes punctuality, someone who is on business will usually expect to have a relaxed conversation with the person before business is addressed. In Colombia some topics that would be discussed in normal conversation would be history, culture, soccer, coffee and the gold museum, but topics that would never be discussed would be religion, drug traffic, and politics. When you first visit Colombia is it custom to have bullfighting so never make a bad comment or else everyone will try to avoid you. This information will help someone in the hospitality and tourism field because someone who is knew the country will need to know the expectations of people who live there, because respect is a major thing in Colombia. It will also help a person get to know their surroundings and understand where the people come from and how they will view you if one of their customs or expectations gets broken.

Assignment #3
List out the environmental impact of the Hospitality and Tourism industry with at least one item of information for each (3/2/1 Rubric)
  • The topics of the environmental impact of the hospitality and tourism industry are water resources, land and air resources, waste disposal, noise levels and visual appearance.
    • Water resources: When a 200 luxury suit takes up the land where the animals and native birds used to live, and it gets used to build dual-headed showers, whirlpool tubs, two outdoor and one indoor pool, a golf course with water features that accent the landscaped gardens will eventually cause a water shortage.
    • Land and air resources: Tourism can negatively impact land resources such as fertile land and forests, by also invading the wetlands and natural habitats of endangered species. Air pollution will increase because of energy production needed to support the industry, which includes more air, road, and rail traffic; along with that air pollution is linked to acid rain, global warming, and photochemical pollution.
    • Waste disposal: Each year cruise ships generate more than 82,000 tons of garbage that makes its way to the ocean, causing the waste water to pollute seas and lakes around tourists attractions. Sewage runoff can threaten eco-sensitive coral reefs because it causes algae to grow and choke the reefs.
    • Noise levels: Recreational vehicles such as Jet skies and snow mobiles are another byproduct of tourism. Loud noises can lead to hearing loss in humans and can cause significant stress to wildlife.
    • Visual Appearance: Some types of visual pollution can include bright neon lights and billboards, large style buildings can block the natural beauty of oceans and mountains. This also causes aesthetic pollution which is the spoiling or contamination of the natural beauty and features of an environment, due to poor planning and design of tourism projects.
Assignment #4
Explain in your words Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and Plog's Psychograhic Analysis and how it applies to the Hospitality and Tourism Industry (open response MHS Rubric).
  • Maslow's Hierarchy of needs and Plog's Psychographic analysis talks about how people need to feel comfortable in a new or known environment because the physiological part of the brain tells a person that they need to have food, shelter, security, love, respect, and finding one's potential. Maslow understands how the brain works when a person comes in contact with a new place that is unfamiliar to them and their instincts come into play automatically. Plog on the other hand simply described people into two simple categorizes which are venturers who like to find new things and be in a new environment, and other people who are dependables who like to keep to places they are comfortable with and won't feel insecure. These two theory's apply to the hospitality and tourism industry because it makes it easier for travel agents to categorize the right hotel, activities and just the place to send people for vacations or just to get away from stress.
